Record 31.8 million on food stamps - Mar. 5, 2009

The number of people receiving food stamps has reached record levels - Record 31.8 million on food stamps - Mar. 5, 2009

Along with the national numbers, Massachusetts is reporting significant increases in the numbers of people applying for food stamps for the first time and, of even greater concern, applying for extensions of benefits.

According to WHDH-TV and The Associated Press, "There are now about 600,000 Massachusetts residents getting food stamps after nearly 100,000 people were added to the rolls in 2008. As many as 20,000 new applications are coming in each month, along with an average of 18,000 requests for extensions."
